Today I got an email regarding my, um, linkedin profile that I have not updated since... 2017?
I guess I like TATA? I know very little about them, except that they rescued Land Rover and Jaguar from the brink of death, and that worked! For some six years...
I’m sure it’s an interesting company, but I’m mostly unaware
of exactly how much they do. Or what they’d like me to do.
I don’t know what enticed Executive Roshini about my profile, it must be my non-existent work experience. Or the fact that I once wrote a few articles in a car website.
Though, moving to either of those cities would be a strong nope cus of my college....
Plus, not sure I could afford an apartment and gas in either city with what I assume they would pay me as a trainee....
Ass
uming this isn’t spam...

Not the same TATA, completely different division and in no way connected to JLR (unless they’re using them for consultants). TATA is a massive conglomerate.

I get all kinds of offers for entry-level positions. My 20+ years of experience is right there in my profile. I chalk it up to a crappy algorithm and ignore the kind invitations to apply.

Ah shit I forgot they’re a sprawling empire....
Seems like they do IT consulting...
Lol... I'm not gonna say I'm a bad programmer... But I'm not gonna say I'm a good one either.

Tata does about everything. And I think they pretty much are India. And vice versa.

They also have a sizable printing and publishing business, a
fact I know because some of my college textbooks were Indian editions
of the ones sold in the US and published by them.

I like the ones where they try to highlight something from my profile while completely ignoring the fact that I was doing that entry level work over 5 years ago.

You should look at the Glassdoor for reviews from employees and former employees of TCS.
TCS is one of the many large I ndian tech labor arbitrage companies. You may have a lot of Indian colleagues and the work ethic and environment could be different from an American IT firm (more conservative).
Basically, they pay you a entry level salary to do IT stuff for other clients.
The clients say they want to accomplish x project. They give TCS a contract and bill them like $115 an hour for you and you to deliver on the project at their facility. You get paid maybe $35 an hour.

Given one of their positions is in Guadalajara, I wouldn’t doubt it... Guadalajara has a large IT industry dedicated to outsourcing coding . As for work ethic... Mexico is the country with the highest working hours in the world... so I don’t think it would be much different. But I definitely don’t have the programming skills to work in an outsourcing firm.

I used to work in the CPG industry and was familiar with Tata Tea, but I didn't know it had any relation to the car company.

I’m torn on updating mine. On one hand, “Night Editor” is a cool and fun title! People love hiring away folks from other outlets, and it’s a title! On the other hand, it’s still part-time/freelance. I don’t want to scare anyone off from working with me while all the full-time junk is on hold, but then again, I put Editor of Black Flag on there while that was still a freelance role.
I guess
there’s nothing to apply for anyway, so I can take my sweet time with it
. FML.

So, is being freelance considered a demotion from a regular position?
I don’t know what HR in media companies looks like, but I think that you’re in a very sensible industry and maybe they don’t care much about formalities like whether a position is freelance or not
.... But I wouldn’t know... it’s what I imagine as an outsider. Maybe some of
your colleagues could guide you through what HR is most sensitive to and adjust your resume to it.
Something will come, Stef, you’re a professional. Just hang in there.

They kinda don’t, especially since it’s such a precarious industry lately. It’s as far from sensible as it gets. Everywhere’s shedding jobs.
Plus, some people prefer being freelance for whatever reason (I do not), so it kind of negates the “but it’s not a full-time job” part. Still, the people I know who were hired away from other outlets were all full-time. I really shot myself in the metaphorical dong and balls when I left to try freelancing. I should’ve just stayed on and started floating resumes around for something more stable.
I’ve been looking for a full-time job for two years and no one’s wanted to hire me
. Now the job market’s worse. I don’t stand a chance.
